The Office of Fair Trading has shown all four supermarket bidders for Safeway the reasons why it referred their proposals to the Competition Commission, according to The Times.
Bidders were given until last night to comment on their individual situations and the full OFT report is expected to be published tomorrow or early next week.
Industry sources told the paper that the offer proposals from Morrisons and Asda have been treated more leniently than those from rivals Sainsbury and Tesco. There is also concern that the report may be open to different interpretations. “There may be scope for more than one conclusion to be drawn,” one source said.
