A legal challenge to the decision to block bids for Safeway by the ‘big three’ supermarket chains have increased as lawyers for Asda and Sainsbury looked for loopholes in the ruling that might allow a judicial review.

The Financial Times reported that Asda and Sainsbury were concerned about plans to make them promise not to buy any Safeway stores - apart from the 53 Morrisons must sell if it bought Safeway. Legal teams may ask for a judicial review of that part of the ruling.
