Waitrose is to have a £134m revamp of its chain of 143 supermarkets over the next three years. The scheme will incorporate new tills, new refrigerators, self-scanning tills, devoting more space to fresh foods and investing more into its home delivery business, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Waitrose wants to expand about a fifth of its existing stores and will also open eight new stores next year.

Asda has moved up to joint favourite alongside Morrisons to win the battle to buy Safeway supermarket chain, according to spread betting company Cantor Index.
The Times said Asda moved up the the list after its last-minute proposal to the Competition Commission to gain clearance to bid. Cantor Index, now list Asda as a joint favourite to buy Safeway with Morrisons, and Philip Green whose bid is not subject to competition scrutiny.

Sales of CD albums have risen 12% over the last three months on the back of cut-price deals at supermarkets, with some 228 million CDs were sold in the last quarter, according to the Sunday Times.

The Mail on Sunday reported that Sainsbury has sold its property development arm for £180m to a consortium of financial buyers.
