Tesco boss Sir Terry Leahy has said that unless the retailer has agreed a deal to enter China by next year “we would have to put the thing on ice”.
The Sunday Times said Sir Terry also played down recent speculation that Tesco was about to sign a joint venture deal with Taiwan-based Ting Hsin International, the owner of the 25-strong chain of Hymart-Hymall hypermarkets in China.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that Asda is to trial a standalone store for its George clothing opposite a Marks and Spencer in Preston, Lancashire.
Asda has already opened George stores in Leeds and Croydon on the edge of shopping districts. But the paper said it now wanted to test the high street.
