Somerfield has been shortlisted for a National Training Award after retraining thousands of staff to boost produce sales.
Its Passion for Produce programme was set up in response to research that questioned the quality of the retailer's fruit and veg. In just five months Somerfield retrained 2,700 staff and turned the produce aisle into its top-performing category.
"Our challenge was to improve knowledge, standards and sales of produce in line with the corporate strategy ," said Lizzie Purtell, Somerfield's foundation training designer.
The winner will be announced on 13 December.
