R&R Ice Cream has scooped up French ice cream maker Pilpa in a 27m deal that could be followed by other Continental acquisitions.
The deal will add 23 million litres of ice cream to the 450 million that R&R already produces. The deal will also give R&R a bigger presence in France where it bought Rolland the country's third-biggest own-label ice cream maker last year.
Like Rolland, Pilpa is a private label specialist. Previously under the umbrella of upmarket food supplier Maison Boncolac, it supplies the French supermarkets with own-label products as well as making ice creams under the Disney and Oasis brands and producing its own Pilpa-branded products.
R&R CEO James Lambert hinted that more acquisitions could be on the way. "We are ideally placed to benefit from further consolidation in the European ice cream sector," said Lambert.
