Asda is to hire two police officers to patrol its Minworth superstore. The uniformed officers from West Midlands Police will work at the store, near Sutton Coldfield, two days a week. The police believe this is the first time a UK supermarket has paid for officers to patrol its aisles. Asda site manager Paul Walkden said: "We want to foster good relations with the local community by protecting and reassuring them while on our premises." Sergeant Bob McKernan said the store attracts between 50,000 and 80,000 shoppers each week, adding: "Unfortunately this includes those in the criminal fraternity. Officers working at Asda should make the site less attractive for criminals." {{NEWS }}
