Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer will this week reveal sales figures for the crucial Christmas period.

M&S will unveil its festive sales data on Wednesday (6 January), with Sainsbury’s reporting a day later.

Waitrose will go first, reporting tomorrow (5 Janaury), while Tesco will announce its figures on 12 January.

“I would expect a pretty upbeat trading statement for the Christmas and New Year period,” Credit Suisse analyst Andrew Kasoulis told the Financial Times.

“During 2010, Tesco is more likely to outperform the market average than underperform.”
