The Wolverhampton-based group has hit the number one spot in The Grocer Top 50, a survey identifying the biggest and the best independents in the UK.
Tates, which was second in the table last year, climbed to the top spot with a turnover up 3% to £177m compared with last year’s number one Farmfoods, which slipped 14% to £173.5m this time round.
Overall, The Grocer Top 50 is a triumph for Spar, which has seven members in the top 20, and for Nisa, whose members make up almost half the full list.
Spar UK MD Jerry Marwood said: “The results achieved by Spar retailers demonstrate the benefits membership can bring, especially when retailers are facing such a strongly competitive market.”
John Sharpe, MD, Central Distribution Services, Nisa-Today’s, said: "We are delighted our members once again form the bulk of this list, as it shows conclusively that Nisa-Today’s retail division is the clear choice for larger independent retailers."
