"Totally unacceptable" is the verdict on commission rates from Spar retailer and president of the Scottish Grocers' Federation Jim Botterill. He runs 37 stores and handles £6m of utility transactions a year, but reckons that after deducting the financial costs he makes just £1.17 per day per site, (£450 a year), a level of return, he said, that would not be tolerated in any other aspect of the business.
Another Spar retailer, Mike Pritchard of Treherbert, said: "The commission paid does not even cover my staff and banking costs and it also causes congestion in my store as customers have to queue up behind those simply there to pay their utility bills."
