Asda in Newport checked in the cheapest of two full baskets for The Grocer 33 shop this week and the store bagged its second top service award in six weeks.
At £38, Asda just pipped rival Tesco in Sale by 4p. The store was tidy, with aisles free of stacking trolleys, and it was well merchandised. Staff were attentive and knowledgeable when asked for product information, and that sealed another Storewatch title for the team.
At Safeway in Weston-super-Mare, new owner Morrisons had implemented its ‘Enjoy the change’ policy which cut the total price of 14 items on our list by 13.6% when compared to pre-takeover days at Safeway.
Tesco in Sale had all 33 items on our main list, was spotless and staff were keen to help with queries. It just missed out as this week’s star performer because of Asda’s lower full basket price.
Tesco’s newest Extra store in Cumbernauld was well presented with polite staff, but it scanned Granny Smith’s apples as Golden Delicious - making an increase of 21p per kilo. Shoppers were being given a coupon worth £4 to be redeemed when they spend £20 in a single transaction.
Morrisons charged for Red Delicious apples, at £1.49/kg, instead of Empire apples at £1.19/kg.
Asda in Roehampton was an uncomfortable shop due to congestion by shelf-stackers and too few tills were open.
