Sainsbury has launched its first supplier development programme aimed specifically at small companies and potential suppliers.
The scheme, in partnership with regional food group South West Food & Drink, enables the multiple to forge new relationships with local suppliers. Twelve companies are taking part in the initiative, which starts on Wednesday April 30 at the Sainsbury store in Paignton, Devon.
The 12-week scheme is targeting companies that have either not worked with the multiple before or have a current turnover of less than £30,000.
Sainsbury regionality manager Jane Wakeling said: "We source approximately £525m per annum from over 100 south west food companies, making it our biggest source of locally produced food."
Managing director of South West Food and Drink Richard Hunter added: "Sainsbury is working with small regional suppliers and allowing them to grow by offering local outlets initially. The programme has an added advantage in that it enhances the skills base of the companies that participate."
