Sales of Fairtrade goods at Sainsbury rose 70% last week, compared with the same week last year, the retailer has revealed.

In the first week of Fairtrade Fortnight, Sainsbury said that sales were well over the £1m mark, suggesting that Fairtrade sales at the retailer are at £200m a year.

Sainsbury added that last week sales of Fairtrade fresh food increased by 22%.

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury said: “Sainsbury has seen Fairtrade sales grow significantly in the last eight weeks, similarly to the growth in organic food in the last 12 months.”

She added: “The increase has grown since we converted our roses to Fairtrade in January.”

Fairtrade Fortnight runs until March 19.
