Sainsbury is to plant more than one million trees as part of a scheme to switch all of its free-range and organic egg production to woodland environments by 2007.
Sainsbury launched Woodland-branded free-range and organic eggs in some stores in 2003, to sell alongside regular free-range and organic eggs. However, research by animal behaviour experts, backed by Sainsbury and its egg supplier Deans Foods, has shown chickens are happiest when living in woodland.
By the end of this year, all Sainsbury’s So Organic eggs will be sourced from woodland farms, and by the end of next year all Sainsbury’s free-range eggs will also be laid in woodland environments.
