Sainsbury is set to become the first major UK retailer to use a battery-powered delivery vehicle for its home shopping deliveries.

The vehicle, which has a top speed of 50mph, will be used in delivery trials in London.

Darren Kell, from electric vehicle manufacturer Smith Electric Vehicles, which supplied Sainsbury with the vehicle, said: “We are confident that our electric vehicles are viable for urban home shopping delivery and expect that other retailers will follow our lead.”
