Several UK supermarkets are considering installing self service checkout lanes after the technology was successfully rolled out in the US. Sainsbury said it was exploring the possibility after US subsidiary Shaw's announced plans to install 30 lanes from NCR last week. Installation is set to be completed by February 2002 with three self-checkout lanes per store enabling shoppers to scan and bag their own goods. An NCR spokesman said all of the UK multiples had expressed interest in the lanes, which have been a big hit across the Atlantic. Kmart recently announced plans to install them in 1,300 stores by the end of the year. {{NEWS }}
