Sainsbury’s has announced a major restructuring at its Holborn head office that is expected to result in a number of job losses.

The supermarket said it plans to restructure “some central teams to align them for… future growth”, with staff at its London base informed of the move earlier today.

Sainsbury’s declined to specify how many workers faced losing their jobs but said suggestions that up to 300 staff could go were “way too high”.

The retail giant has already outlined plans to relocate from the Holborn premises to smaller offices in King’s Cross, with the move pencilled in for 2011.

News of the restructuring comes despite Sainsbury’s posting its best-ever Christmas trading figures earlier this month, with like-for-like sales up 4.5% over the key festive period.
