Sainsbury's is to phase out the use of palm oil from unsustainable sources in its own-label products.

The retailer will convert its first products to sustainable palm oil by May next year and will announce a deadline for a total phase-out of unsustainable sources by February, according to reports in the Guardian.

“From soap to biscuits, palm oil is in thousands of everyday food and beauty item wherever you shop,” said director of Sainsbury's brand Judith Batchelar.

“Rather than banning the use of palm oil, we want to find a sustainable solution that will stop deforestation while continuing to support the communities that rely on its production.”
