The retailer has reportedly told analysts that it could open as many as 1,000 sandwich shops in the future if a trial store on London’s Fleet Street, which it opened last month, is successful.
The store, Fresh Kitchen, sells a variety of hot and cold dishes, such as hot pork belly baps (rsp: £3.99).
The sandwiches are prepared fresh each day and served from behind a long counter by staff wearing fast-food style baseball caps.
Sainsbury’s has so far remained tight-lipped about the launch. But analyst Nick Bubb said: “They say they have pitched prices below Pret and that they feel they can take them on.”
