Tesco and M&S have triumphed in supermarket sandwich sales with 25.4% and 23.4% of the market respectively.

Sainsbury's (12.1%), Asda (7.6%) and Morrisons (6.2%) lagged behind, according to the British Sandwich Association's report. But sandwich and snack bars were holding their own. Subway sold £300m of sandwiches, double that of Tesco.

The ready-made sandwich market is now worth £5bn, up just over 4%.

The average sandwich cost £1.85, but with ingredient prices, fuel and other inflationary factors is set to rise in price.
