The contract, worth £1m a year to mussel farmers, makes SSMG the biggest supplier of live mussels to the leading UK supermarkets.
SSMG said it had been chosen by Tesco because it was able to offer the best quality and consistency of supply of Scottish rope-grown mussels, and could extend availability throughout the year.
Donny Gillies, sales director of SSMG, said: “This is excellent
news for the Scottish seafood industry. It emphasises that fresh Scottish seafood is the best in the world.”
A Tesco spokesman said: “We can now offer high-quality, live mussels throughout the year.”
More and more Scottish shellfish farmers are joining SSMG. The group’s turnover has grown by 20% in the past year.
