Wal-Mart president and CEO Lee Scott has warned UK multiples that Asda will next year be going all out to win the best value award in The Grocer 33 shopping basket survey for the sixth consecutive time.

Speaking during the annual Shareholders' Convention in Bentonville, Scott expressed his delight that its Leeds-based subsidiary had checked in 26 of the cheapest full baskets between June 2001 and May 2002.

He told The Grocer: "I know that Asda chief operating officer Tony DeNunzio and his team are keen to win the title again next year."

Amid cheers from more than 150 Asda staff attending the Arkansas shareholders' convention, The Grocer 33 trophy was presented to DeNunzio by The Grocer's editor, Clive Beddall.

DeNunzio said Asda had driven down its prices throughout the year, making it "a record 12% better value than competitors."
