Henderson Group has become the first convenience retailer in Northern Ireland to introduce self-service checkouts.

The Spar wholesaler, which has 54 company-owned stores, has introduced two self-service tills at its new flagship store in Dundonald near Belfast. The system is to be rolled out to Spar stores across the province and the UK.

Spar has also introduced electronic shelf-edge labelling in the store. All products are labelled with LCD units that are automatically updated with price changes and product information.

"Our aim as a retailer is to make the shopping experience for our customers as convenient and hassle-free as possible," said Mark McCammond, retail operations director, Henderson Retail. "These new systems are testament to our position as Northern Ireland's most progressive symbol group retailer."

McCammond said customer feedback at the Dundonald store had been positive.
