Shoppers are increasingly turning to supermarkets for homewares, a survey by market research group Verdict has revealed.

The survey found that department stores and specialist retailers have lost sales in the past five years to Tesco and Asda as the supermarket groups move into the market.

Department stores controlled a 45% share of the homeware market in 1999 with sales of £3.75bn. However, the survey, found that in 2004 their market share had slipped to 38.9% with sales of £4.1bn.
