Silver Spoon is hoping its new sweetener gets the same welcome in the UK as it did in the US and stir up up £10m in sales in two years.

Associated British Foods has teamed up with commodities giant Cargill to market and distribute the zero-calorie Truvia sweetener in the UK by 2012.

The timing of the launch is dependent on the anticipated EU approval of stevia leaf extracts which give the product its sweetness and ABF said Truvia would hit stores in September at the earliest.

When Truvia launched in the US two years ago, it grew the previously stagnant sweetener category by 18% and ABF predicted it would drive the UK's category sales from £50m to £60m by 2013. "Truvia also has the added benefit of a granulated, rather than powdered, texture, making it more suitable for pouring on cereals and fruit," added Tony Lucas, marketing director at Silver Spoon.
