Friends of the Earth is concerned about the impact such expansion by stealth will have on local shops and on traffic congestion. But there is also a broader principle at stake. Some of the new Asda developments are the equivalent of new stores and as such should be subject to the same criteria.

Local people and local businesses should have the opportunity to object, and the impact on traffic should be assessed. These developments are a kick in the teeth to existing shop centres, and as things stand, they have no right to object. That is why Friends of the Earth wants to see the planning regulations amended.
