Online delivered wholesaler Blueheath has appointed Gary Smith to the new role of group buying director.

Smith joins from Morrisons, where he was commercial manager for grocery. He has more than 30 years' buying experience in the UK food industry, including roles at Safeway and Sainsbury's.

The Grocer Big 30 company, which is in the throes of a comprehensive strategic review to boost profitability. Smith will be responsible for setting and delivering Blueheath's buying and marketing strategy across all three of its businesses, CTM Wholesale, AC Ward & Son and Blueheath.

He said: "My aim is to build relationships and drive strategy with our suppliers, as well as developing partnerships with the key groups. Developing our business with the symbol groups will also be core."

Smith's is the latest in a long string of new appointments, including the arrival of new chief executive Mark Aylwin in August, and the promotion of Richard Rose to deputy chairman replacing Colin Smith.
