Scottish Spar wholesaler CJ Lang has announced a major restructure of senior roles within the business to improve the efficiency of its retail and wholesale operations.
The wholesale division will come under the control of Dick Smith, who has switched from commercial director to wholesale director, reporting directly to chief executive David
Walker. Smith assumed responsibility for the Martex Cash & Carry Group, its five Scottish C& C outlets, last year (The Grocer, July 19, p16).
Group trading director David Lamb has assumed special responsibilities for retail trading. He will lead a team of 23 including a new senior trading manager. The retail division will remain under the overall direction of managing director Ed Ferguson, to whom Lamb will report. CJ Lang said that, as a means of giving additional clarity to the retail and wholesale divisions, separate marketing teams would be assigned to each one.
Smith said: “Retail has taken an increasingly major share of management time and investment, sometimes to the detriment of the wholesale side.
“This is now all set to change. We have started an investment programme which will see improvements to depots, the introduction of a wholesale space management system, a new telesales room and trading deals that are more suited to the cash and carry market.”
