Somerfield is launching what it hopes will be a “best in class” ethnic offering in 350 stores to pull in more one-stop-shop customers who would otherwise be lost to nearby specialists.
Asian-focused aisles will roll out from September 5, with 157 new ambient, chilled and frozen lines. All prices will be matched against brands in Tesco.
Tesco has ramped up its ethnic offer, most recently with the opening of its Slough Extra store with a major Asian range.
Hament Kotadia, category buying director for convenience at Somerfield, said: “Tesco has really taken the initiative and specialists have begun to feel it with sales down 20% to 30%.” >>p38 Retail Spotlight
