Somerfield has completed the purchase of 118 UK forecourt convenience stores from Texaco for £15.3m.

The retailer announced back in February that it was in talks with Texaco over its forecourts, with the possibility of it purchasing up to 200 sites.

Under the terms announced today, Somerfield will acquire 13 forecourts of which 9 are freehold, and this will increase Somerfield’s forecourt convenience portfolio to 162 stores.

The new stores are to be fitted out to the ‘Somerfield Essentials’ format with an estimated fit-out cost of £35m over the next 3 years.

Steve Back, chief executive of Somerfield, said: “We are extremely pleased to have concluded this deal which represents an exciting opportunity for Somerfield to increase its presence in the forecourts convenience sector, and we welcome over 1,400 employees to the Somerfield Group.”
