The Somerfield Group achieved a 1.1% increase in like-for-like sales for the first quarter, despite the general trend of weak sales for July and August across the food retail sector.

Somerfield recorded like-for-like increase of 1.3% while Kwiksave sales were up by 1%. The growth was attributed to Somerfield’s new fascia and refit programme.

Despite the sales increase recorded for the quarter, July and August recorded a decline in sales by 0.8% with a substantial drop in sales for seasonal goods such as ice cream, beer and barbecue products.
