Based in Glasgow, MacLachlan will look at the Scottish range to see how it is positioned in stores.
He previously worked as a business development manager for Safeway for 20 years.
MacLachlan said: “It’s a very different retail environment to England and Wales. Back to school happens earlier, Hallowe’en is bigger and there are events such as Burns Night and Hogmanay. It’s more complex than just making sure we stock Scottish products, as customers in different regions have very different demands.”
Since 2004 Somerfield has more than doubled its presence in Scotland, operating 180 stores.
