Supermarket group Somerfield has reported a 0.6% decrease in like-for-like sales for the 16 weeks to August 16.

Like-for-like sales at stores operating under the Kwik Save facia were also down 4.8% for the period, although like-for-like sales at stores operating under the Somerfield facia were up 1.6%.

In a trading statement released to the City ahead of its agm later today, the supermarket chain said that store acquisitions had increased total group sales by 17% for the period.

“Despite challenging trading conditions, the Board is satisfied with the Group’s progress,” the statement said.

The statement added that there had still been no formal offer for the group but the board of director was “seeking to bring the process to a swift conclusion”.
