Somerfield will roll out voice picking technology across its depot network after pilots at its Pitreavie distribution centre increased pick productivity by 10% and delivered accuracy of 99.8%.
The paperless picking system, developed for Somerfield’s logistics partner Wincanton by Voxware, enables staff to move between picks without having to refer to lists or return to the office for fresh instructions, said group logistics & IT director Martin Oakes.
Instructions are delivered via headsets so staff can focus on the product and keep their hands free, improving accuracy
and speed.
Somerfield was now considering extending the use of the technology to the receiving of goods, putting them away and picking by line - where one line of product was picked for several stores, he added.
“We can see obvious benefits as the system is rolled out. It will result in improved accuracy leading to less checking in stores and faster replenishment to the shelf.”
