While one supermarket has been rolling back the prices, another has been charging a premium for everyday items. At Sainsbury's Sydenham branch last Sunday a couple's bill leapt from £101 to £704 as the last item was scanned through the till. It wasn't a 38-inch plasma TV that had added £603 to the bill, however, but a piece of smoked haddock. Fortunately it wasn't food inflation gone mad - just a wrong barcode. Good job too. 'Feed your family for £2,412' doesn't have the same ring to it.
