Spar UK is calling on the food industry to help charity Crisis feed 1,500 homeless people over the Christmas period.

Spar is co-ordinating the industry-wide initiative to support the charity's eight Christmas shelters around the country.

As well as offering a bed for the night and three hot meals a day, the shelters include a medical centre, provide housing and legal advice, as well as drugs and alcohol counselling.

The scheme also provides visitors with a new set of clothes, a haircut, internet access and a full programme of entertainment.

The Open Christmas initiative served 25,000 hot meals last year and was supported by The Co-operative Group, Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Unilever. Spar is now asking for help and food donations from suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers to make this year's event a success.

Those interested in offering support should email robert.evans@crisis.org.uk or call 020 7426 3822.
