Spar has stolen a march on its rivals in the Irish Republic by launching a food guide aimed at teaching children how to eat healthily.
The Spar Kids’ Guide to Healthy Living has been compiled by Aoileann Garavaglia, presenter of children’s food programme Yumee on RTE, the Irish national station, and by nutritionist Paula Mee, who is involved in TV health programmes.
“We want children to learn that it can also be fun making food that is good for them,” said Garavaglia. “I have always tried to look beyond the chicken nuggets and chips. Getting children involved in the planning and preparation of food can help them develop positive eating habits and teach them the importance of a balanced diet.”
The initiative also involves a schools’ competition in which pupils devise a healthy lunch menu. The best from each county will be printed in the guide, with the overall winners treated to a cooking day at their school by the RTE team.
