Spar has signed a contract with supply chain specialist Exel to manage the launch of an inbound supply project in January.

Speaking at a meeting in London ahead of the Spar conference in Cape Town, Spar UK managing director Jerry Marwood said the project would consolidate Spar buying for a range of goods across all the mainland regional distribution centres of its wholesaler members. Savings could amount to £6m a year.

Spar will initially work with 50 smaller suppliers, he said. “We’re all buying smaller volumes infrequently from a range of suppliers so it’s about putting them altogether.” The first stage of the project would be to open a central distribution point just outside the Manchester area, where goods would be consolidated, he said.
