Tesco has devoted between £8.5m and £10m to the roll-out of updated scales across UK and Ireland to cut queues and speed up transaction times at food counters.
The PC-based scales use a touchscreen system created in partnership with IT firm Conchango. Business project manager Mark Green said they were 60% quicker.
He said: “What makes them quicker is the response time of the hardware. Equally, the use of a picture-based touchscreen to confirm products improves service time. Under the old system, counter staff had to check paper tickets to ensure they corresponded to the order.”
Green said the scales were also able for the first time to transmit information about product purchases to Tesco headquarters for analysis.
Green said: “We are the first to market with this technology and we wanted to develop it ourselves.”
