>>TESTING HOW STORES PERFORM ON A THEMED SHOPPING BASKET

Our shoppers visited a local Spar this week to top up on seven key convenience lines. Service at all the stores was described as high, and each carried a good range of well-merchandised stock.
Three baskets came back full, with the cheapest at the Spar in St Helen’s thanks to its lower price on a 4-pack of Carling lager at £3.29. Alcohol was not sold at the Spar in Belfast. In Lothian Road, Edinburgh, Spar charged £11.30 for its seven items and at Costly Street in Ivybridge our list cost £11.71.
Promotional activity centred on 500ml bottles of Coca-Cola which was on a buy two for £1.19 offer. Marlboro Lights was the only out-of-stock at Assarts Farm, while three stores did not sell The Sun because newsagents traded nearby.
