Newly created super-brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev has announced the first UK casualty of its merger, the Stag brewery in London.

It will be closed next year with the loss of an estimated 180 jobs as part of a £690m cost-saving programme. The company confirmed up to 3,000 job losses in the US, but said it planned to keep its 12 breweries there up and running.

The decision to close the Stag brewery was also blamed on "challenging market conditions and higher costs imposed as a result of record rises in beer taxation".

The Stag operation brews AB's Budweiser, Bud Ice and Michelob Ultra brands. Analysts had been predicting the closure of since InBev's £26bn takeover of AB in July, as InBev's existing UK breweries were known to have the capacity to take on production of the brands.
