The Co-operative Group has reported that its store refit programme is running smoothly with 100 now refurbished.

It said it would invest £23m in 200 further refits this year, plus £37m in equipment.

The group's food superstores had been hit hard by the multiples and it had experienced a "disproportionately high level of sales decline in these stores".However, seasonal promotions on alcohol, fruit and veg boosted second-half trading, it said in its full-year results.

Food retail sales fell 1.9% to £2.98bn in the year to January 14. Operating profit remained level at £71.6m.
