The protests were organised by the GE-Free Markets Coalition as part of a continuing campaign to persuade leading chains, such as Safeway, Shaw's and Food Lion, to remove all GM ingredients from own label lines. Members of the group include Greenpeace, the Organic Consumers Association and Clean Water Action. The coalition claims Trader Joe's decision to source only non-GM ingredients for its own brand last November was the direct result of its campaign. Greenpeace's Heather Whitehead said: "We are here to put all major supermarkets on notice that American consumers do not want to be guinea pigs in this genetic experiment with our food. "If Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Trader Joe's can listen to their customers and remove untested and unwanted genetically modified ingredients, so can these other leading supermarkets." {{NEWS }}
