Sir; Concerning the letter from British Retail Consortium food policy director Richard Ali (The Grocer, May 8, p25).
The Competition Commission’s report into the Safeway mergers clearly indicates that suppliers are still being bullied by the biggest four supermarkets.
It is evident that the supermarket code of practice has made no difference to this activity by the multiples. On environmental issues a survey by Sheffield Hallam University found that carbon dioxide emissions per square metre from supermarket buildings were the highest of any activity in the retail/light industrial sector.
As for healthy eating, Ali seems to have missed the Which? report that found supermarkets ‘healthy’ ranges to not be so healthy.
