Tesco, Morrisons and Asda have cleared petrol pumps of 'rogue fuel' which is claimed to have caused thousands of cars to break down.

An investigation into the incident, discovered last week, found that “excess levels of silicon” had been traced to four storage tanks at a depot in Essex.

Tesco has emptied unleaded petrol tanks at 150 petrol stations in the south east of England and has refilled them with uncontaminated fuel.

Morrisons has stopped selling unleaded fuel at 41 petrol stations, while Asda is replacing fuel at 30 forecourts.

Meanwhile, industry associations have warned petrol prices could rise this week as the affected supermarkets search for fresh supplies.
