Supermarkets are leading the charge for extra ­warehouse space.

Tesco and Marks & Spencer both took on new logistics and storage space in excess of 500,000 sq ft in the three months to the end of September, reflecting BRC figures that showed retail sales for September up by 2.2% and non-store sales, including online, up by 19.1%.

According to CB Richard Ellis' quarterly trawl through real estate records, B&Q, JD Sports and online retailer Amazon completed the list of the top five most space-hungry retailers in the three months under review.
