Spar is preparing a major sales push for magazines and newspapers to exploit its strength in the sector. Retail development controller Barry Wallis said the promotions, beginning in the autumn, would initially be run as a pilot scheme through 500 company owned and Naafi owned stores to demonstrate to publishers how they would work. A roll out to independents would follow. More than 2,200 Spar stores sell news, but Wallis said the group had only recently identified the potential. He said: "We can offer publishers 2,200 opportunities to gain prominence and get more exposure." Talks with magazine publishers are advanced, but Wallis said Spar had also been talking to newspaper publishers about initiatives such as link purchases. Spar has held exploratory talks with the Falcon Group and WH Smith News, both offering single supplier deals to multiples. Wallis said Spar had opened dialogue with the two groups because it needed to protect the interests of its members with regard to distribution. {{NEWS }}
