The UK's first dedicated cash & carry for regional food and drink has been closed down less than a year after it opened.

Taylors Regional Foods opened a 33,000 sq ft outlet in Dundee in November to serve independent retailers. Taylors, a sister company of potato company Taypack, which has distribution centres in Scotland, Wales and the south west, closed the venture to focus on its core delivered wholesale business for local and regional products.

"The cash & carry format was closed two or three months ago," said commercial director Ronnie Wilson. "Our normal business model is much more effective and the landlord of the Dundee site was offered a deal we were not prepared to match."

Taylors has also ditched plans to open a second cash & carry in the south west. But it planned to develop an "online cash & carry" that it hoped to open in the spring, Wilson said.
