Tesco is battling for planning permission for a "wish list" of standalone Tesco Express sites, as it prepares to open its fourth site in Croydon in May.
Further sites are being held up by planning issues, said a spokeswoman.
However the first three sites in Southborough, Kent, East Wittering in East Sussex and Manchester are performing well. The store in Southborough was initially targeted to take £40,000 a week, but sales have exceeded expectation, said Tesco.
Tesco was recently denied planning permission for an Express site in Colchester, Essex, and has appealed to the secretary of state in a case in Dibden, Hampshire.
Planning permission for the Southborough store was only granted on appeal.
