Tesco could be plotting a move into the Indian supermarket sector.

Terry Leahy, chief executive of the supermarket group, is due to fly out to India in the next few weeks to visit Tesco’s back operations in the country.

At present the Indian retail sector is closed to foreign investment. However, reports suggest that Tesco is pressing the Indian government to allow foreign investment, possibly with local partners.

US retail giant Wal-Mart, French retailer Carrefour and German chain Metro are also interested in entering the Indian market.
